We’re excited to have you join us in growing healthy food, building community, and learning about sustainable agriculture! This guide outlines the rules, safety guidelines, and expectations to make your volunteer experience safe, productive, and enjoyable. 

Remember to bring water and please note that the closest restrooms are in the Convocation Center & H building.

 

1. General Rules 

  • Check In & Out – Upon arrival, sign in with the farm coordinator and note your start time. Sign out before leaving. 
  • Attendance – Arrive on time for your scheduled shift. If you cannot attend, notify the farm coordinator in advance. 
  • Respect the Space – Treat plants, tools, equipment, and other volunteers with care. 
  • No Unauthorized Visitors – Only scheduled volunteers are allowed in the work areas. 
  • No Smoking, Vaping, or Alcohol – This is a tobacco- and alcohol-free space.  

2. Safety Guidelines 

  • Clothing – Wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Long pants and gloves are recommended. 
  • Weather Preparedness – Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water bottle for sunny days; dress in layers for cooler weather. 
  • Tool Safety 
    • Use tools only as instructed. 
    • Return tools to their proper location after use. 
    • Keep sharp edges pointed down when carrying. 
  • Lifting – Bend at your knees, not your back. Ask for help when lifting heavy objects. 
  • Hydration & Breaks – Take water breaks as needed and let the coordinator know if you feel unwell. 
  • Emergency – In case of injury, alert the manager immediately. First aid supplies are on site.  

3. Volunteer Expectations 

  • Follow Instructions – Listen to task directions carefully before starting. 
  • Stay Engaged – Ask questions if you’re unsure about a task. 
  • Work as a Team – Help fellow volunteers when appropriate. 
  • Be Present – No personal phone use during active tasks (except for emergencies). 
  • End-of-Shift Tasks – Put away tools, tidy your work area, and check out with the coordinator. 

 

4. Activities You May Do 

  • Planting seeds and seedlings 
  • Weeding and mulching 
  • Harvesting produce 
  • Composting and soil preparation 
  • General maintenance (watering, cleaning, organizing)
